Del Toro Exhibition
Back in 2021 I received a brief from my tutors asking me to create an advertisement piece to promote the upcoming Guillermo Del Toro exhibition located in London’s Somerset House. This event would showcase the legendary work of Guillermo Del Toro, including his film related art and design pieces, story-boards, and film posters from his broad selection of films such as: The Book of Life, Hell Boy, and Pans Labyrinth.
With a client as big as Somerset House, I was eager to impress and began my design process by carrying out some extensive research into Guillermo Del Toro himself. I also looked into his unique and eerie style, alongside his interesting backlist of films in which he has produced and written.
Del Toro has created many of the greatest monsters in film history, and I enjoyed this section of my research considerably. I also created many different mood-boards and mind-maps to help me organise all of my research. This enabled me to generate many different design ideas.
I wanted to create a brand new, frightening, and mysterious monster to appear upon the front of my advertisement campaign. I utilised the basic shape of an octopus for my monster creation, and then added uncanny tentacles, horns, sharp teeth, and an endless number of eyes. Moreover, I utilised ProCreate alongside Adobe Illustrator when creating this unique design. It was my first time using this platform and it allowed me to have more creative freedom. I also showcased one of my favourite Guillermo Del Toro monsters named The Pale Man within my final advertisement design.
